Justin Timberlake may have brought sexy back, but ANC Youth League president Julius Malema has made military-style berets funky again – the beret was the fashion accessory to be seen in on Thursday.

Men, women, the young and the young at heart sported berets – a classic Che Guevara look – in various colours.

Retailing at R60, the black beret bearing the youth league emblem proved to be a popular purchase by supporters gathered at Beyers Naudé Square on Thursday morning. In two hours, Donna Maseko took more than R2 000.

Mpho Moyo wore a maroon beret in memory of her late grandfather – an Umkhonto weSizwe member.

“I wear this beret as a living legacy of my grandad. I see him as an inspiration for the role he played in the struggle for freedom,” she said.

The revolutionary look swept through the large crowd, with pockets of people sporting berets and overalls while others wore camouflage army pants with Muammar Gaddafi t-shirts.

They hailed the late Libyan dictator as an inspirational leader who was an excellent example for other African leaders. One supporter said his death was a great loss to the continent and the united-Africa dream. - The Star
