Pretoria - Tshwane’s mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, is to visit Kleinfontein, the all-white cultural community 30km south-east of the capital, on Wednesday.

The community, Pretoria News reported last week, is proudly Afrikaans and Christian, and this has led to widespread debate and a protest march to the settlement by the DA Youth.

Mayoral spokesman Blessing Manale said representatives of the mayoral committee would visit the community, along with representatives of the departments of community safety, environmental affairs and city planning. Members of the South African Human Rights Commission are also expected to visit the community.

It is estimated the delegation will comprise between 15 and 20 representatives.

“So many more departments have become aware of the situation and are interested in the cultural dialogue,” Manale told the Pretoria News.

The visit, according to Manale, has a two-fold purpose.

The first is to assess the application by the residents of Kleinfontein for their community to be declared a town separate from the City of Tshwane. Manale said the mayoral committee had received preliminary reports regarding this application.

“Second, we need to figure out if we even want this type of enclave in the city,” said Manale.

Marisa Haasbroek, Kleinfontein’s volunteer communications officer, said the comnunity welcomed news of the mayor’s visit. “We are glad he is coming. We have been trying for more than a year to get him here,” she said.

Last week, DA Youth members marched to Kleinfontein in protest at its “racial policies”.
