Johannesburg - The Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) applauded Cabinet's endorsement of the National Development Plan (NDP), on Monday.

“Fedusa will be an active participant in all processes linked to the successful implementation of the 18 key targets put forward,” general secretary Dennis George said in a statement.

On Friday, Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Collins Chabane said Cabinet had endorsed the objectives of the NDP prepared by the National Planning Commission (NPC).

“The lekgotla also acknowledged the NDP as a strategic framework to form the basis of future government detailed planning,” he told a post-lekgotla media briefing.

A Cabinet committee would be set up to develop targets and implementation plans with the Forum for SA Directors General.

The NPC would assess implementation and refine the plan, Chabane said.

“It's a plan that gives you 30 years. It's going to be revised from time to time, adjusted to align it with new things which are going to happen,” he said.

On Monday, George said Fedusa believed a comprehensive development policy framework could play a critical role in accelerating shared growth and reducing poverty.

However, Fedusa was concerned that the government's failing administrative capacity, lack of political will and collapse of implementation could result in the NDP's failure.

“Our country is literally a graveyard of failed plans and there remains a daunting gap between the vision of the NDP and the current reality.” - Sapa
