Johannesburg - South Africa and the world has once again come together to commemorate the centenary of the late Nelson Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela by celebrating his extraordinary life and legacy.
Mandela Day is celebrated globally on July 18 - the day of the late icon's birthday and is a call of action to citizens to make a difference.
This year's event, marking his 100th birthday, ran on the slogan "be the legacy" and included the annual lecture, delivered by former US president Barack Obama at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
In honour of the centenary, IOL has compiled a video tracking the global icon's life, from his birth in Mvezo, Transkei, to his early education and later, his involvement with the African National Congress (ANC) and imprisonment on Robben Island.
Also featured in the montage is Mandela's personal life, from his marriages to Winnie Madikizela and Graca Machel, to his diagnosis with prostate cancer.
