Johannesburg - Water and sanitation provision should be used to fast-track transformation, Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane said on Friday.

“We need to ensure that solutions to water and sanitation challenges must be about opening the sector to those that have been disenfranchised,” Mokonyane said in a speech prepared for delivery at a water and sanitation summit in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

“This will have to be done by providing skills development, economic empowerment, as well access to quality water and dignified sanitation.”

She said the water ownership patterns and water use rights would have to be revisited.

Communities would also have to be educated on the conservation, preservation, and security of water.

“We can achieve this only if we put communities first in what we do.”
