Johannesburg - A parliamentary committee set up to deal with the Nkandla affair should consider the Public Protector's entire report on the matter, the Freedom Front Plus said on Tuesday.

“(We) are of the opinion that the comprehensive report of the public protector should be placed before the ad hoc committee,” FF Plus Chief Whip Corné Mulder said.

The ad hoc committee's brief is to consider submissions made by President Jacob Zuma in response to Protector Thuli Madonsela's report on a R246 million upgrade to his private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

On Tuesday, the African National Congress nominated seven MPs to Parliament to serve on the ad hoc committee.

Mulder said Madonsela should be given an opportunity to explain her findings to the committee.

“After which the president and his relevant ministers should be given the opportunity to come and explain their actions to the committee,” he said.

Mulder said the work of the committee could be restricted to the reply of Zuma.

He said the committee should begin its work without delay.

“If it is necessary, the deadline of the committee should be extended to May 5,” Mulder said.

ANC Youth league spokesman Bandile Masuku welcomed the formation of the ad hoc committee.

“The current processing of the Nkandla report by Parliament indicates the massive strength of our 20-year-old democracy,” he said.

“ 1/8It 3/8 confirms to the world that the ANC-dominated Parliament and the ANC-led government runs South Africa in a transparent and open manner in line with the country's constitution.”

Masuku said the league believed the committee would carry out the brief as given by the Speaker of Parliament.

“We... are confident that the process will lay to rest most of the current brouhaha before the term of the fifth democratic government begins.”
