Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has directed the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe allegations of maladministration in the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the presidency said on Wednesday.

The allegations to be investigated related to the appointment of a service provider for technical support and administrative services in the department's ward based co-operatives programme, spokesman Mac Maharaj said.

The SIU would also probe payments made by the department that were allegedly not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable or cost-effective.

Zuma had signed a proclamation directing the SIU to investigate, said Maharaj.
