Cape Town – A hotel restaurant manager appeared in a Cape Town court on Thursday, accused of stealing thousands of rands from the Cape Verde Hotel.

Kavir K Maharaj faces seven charges of theft, involving R53,376, allegedly committed between January and July last year.

He appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Bellville before magistrate Sabrina Sonnenberg. This court deals with serious fraud, corruption and theft cases.

According to the charge sheet, Maharaj was caught out when the hotel’s business manager noticed suspicious transactions, all at the end of the day when shifts changed, relating to the restaurant’s accounting system.

Video footage showed Maharaj allegedly manipulating the system, and that he was present when paperwork involving the point-of-sale programme was tampered with.

Prosecutor, State advocate Gertrude Magopeni, alleged that he short-banked cash takings and kept the shortfalls for himself.

The case was postponed to July 25 when he is expected to plead to the charges.
