Johannesburg - Allegations of a "revenge attack" carried out by police on foreign nationals who had been filmed attacking officers are currently being investigated, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Wednesday.

Video footage emerged recently showing police officers being assaulted by a mob during a raid at a reported drug den in Vanderbijlpark.

According to provincial police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele, when the police squad arrived at the house in CW5 and nobody opened, they entered and discovered a dead man.

Makhubele said the officers on duty removed the body from the house but while doing this, came under siege from angry community members

In a two-minute video making the rounds on social media, a furious crowd can be seen attacking police officers while a deceased man is seen lying in the yard.

Following this, officers allegedly returned to the house where the attack took place and proceeded to vandalise the place and assault the occupants of the house, EWN reported.

Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini confirmed the police watchdog was probing the assault allegations.

"I can confirm that we are investigating allegations of assault that happened on the same evening officers alleged they were attacked by occupants of the house.

"Some people were [reportedly] injured during the alleged assault by police. Investigations are currently underway."
