Johannesburg - The protest in Boiketlong in Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg has been called off, residents said on Thursday.

“We have suspended the protest until we meet with our mayor Greta Hlongwane on Friday afternoon,” community leader Daniel Mofokeng said.

“We will wait to hear what the mayor has to say.”

Mofokeng said if the response was not satisfactory they would embark on another protest.

Boiketlong residents had been protesting for decent housing since Wednesday. One person was shot and killed during the violence on Wednesday.

Roads were barricaded with stones, trees and burning tyres.
