Johannesburg - Seven people were left injured following a shootout outside a block of flats in the Johannesburg CBD, paramedics said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Kerk Street but it remains unclear what caused the shootout.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived at the scene at 12.15pm to find local authorities already at the scene.

"Upon closer inspection, paramedics found a woman and six men lying outside the block of flats.

"Paramedics immediately assessed the patients and found that two were in a critical condition while the five others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious."

Meiring confirmed that the injured patients were then treated, with those critically injured being receiving advanced life support interventions.

Once they were stabilised, paramedics then transported the patients to various provincial hospitals for urgent care.

"The details surrounding this shooting are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations," Meiring said
