Durban - A police captain was arrested on Thursday after allegedly shooting a Wentworth resident in a parking dispute four days ago.

The 44-year-old officer, who went missing after the Sunday shooting, has also been linked to other alleged crimes.

A suspect was expected to appear in court today after an arrest by SAPS Hawks detectives.

A source said that the victim of the shooting, Michael Bruce, 39, and a friend had driven to a petrol station in Austerville Drive, on Sunday morning, to buy cigarettes.

It is alleged Bruce had driven towards an empty parking space, but the policeman arrived from another entrance and moved to take the same spot.

Hooting and an argument followed. It is alleged both men got out of their vehicles and the policeman allegedly punched Bruce, then drew a gun.

Bruce’s friend tried to intervene, but was allegedly also punched.

After a tussle over the gun, shots were fired.

Bruce was shot three times and fell to the ground.

He apparently got up and fled towards a block of flats. He was then taken to King Edward VIII Hospital.

The policeman allegedly fled the scene and police started the search for him.

Bruce, a father of three, was in immense pain in hospital and had been undergoing various tests, said his fiancée, Shanice Ball.

Wentworth police opened a case of attempted murder and the KZN SAPS Hawks took on the investigation.

It is alleged the policeman used an unlicensed firearm to shoot Bruce.

Police could not say whether there were any internal disciplinary hearings against the captain.

In January this year the policeman was granted bail of R10 000 in the light of various charges, including attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He also faced a charge of pointing a firearm in public relating to an incident 10 months ago.

In March this year he was granted bail of R5 000, this time on four counts of attempted murder, for his alleged role in a Christmas Day shooting in Wentworth.

The status of these cases could not be established at the time of publication.
