Christians who remain silent in the face of xenophobia are guilty of a sin of omission, the African Christian Democratic Party said on Friday.

“Christians should speak out whenever they hear negative sentiments expressed about foreigners in taxis, shops and in the street because this is how xenophobia begins,” said party leader Reverend Kenneth Meshoe.

Meshoe was speaking at a women's prayer meeting in the Nguni Hall in Vosloorus.

He said that judgment of an entire nation or tribe should not be based on the actions of the few, “just as there are good South Africans and bad South Africans”.

Queen Mampuru of the Pedi tribe was also in attendance at the meeting. - Sapa
