Pretoria - Burglars broke into the Pretoria north home of Afrikaans singer Piet Botha at the weekend while he and his family were asleep, according to a report on Monday.

Botha, son of former minister of foreign affairs Pik Botha, had just returned from a concert in Rustenburg and fallen asleep when his wife Vivian woke him up to tell him something was amiss, Beeld reported.

Thieves had broken a door, bent back burglar bars and made off with Botha's cellphone, wallet and a camera.

His father Pik, who lives on the same premises, said on Sunday he was grateful that nobody got hurt, but that “what happened here is dwarfed by the pain and suffering that thousands of other South Africans have to go through because of murder and robbery.” - Sapa
