Pensioners were left high and dry when skelms robbed a Shoprite store in Kraaifontein yesterday.
The golden oldies had to look for another paypoint after five armed thieves hit up the store in the Bloch Centre in Belmont Park.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirms: “According to reports, five unknown armed suspects entered a local retail store near to Van Riebeeck Road in Kraaifontein at about 5.55am.
“Upon entering, they kept the staff at gunpoint and fled the scene with valuables in an undisclosed direction.
“We can confirm that no shots were fired and no injuries sustained have been reported.
“Kraaifontein Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.”
When the Daily Voice arrived at the scene, the main entrance at the centre was cordoned off with police tape, while scores of pensioners queued outside waiting for the Shoprite store to reopen.
A 64-year-old woman said: “I arrived here very early and noticed three black guys who looked suspicious. They went inside and I thought they went to go draw money by the ATM.
“A few minutes later they came rushing out with a bag.
“About 15 minutes later, the police came rushing here but by that time those guys were long gone.
“Most of us like to draw our money by Shoprite because there are long queues by the other paypoints.
“I don’t know if they took our SASSA money. The manager told us to rather go to the Shoprite there near by the Kraaifontein Police Station.”
