Police swooped on a house in the Nkonka Reserve on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and caught a local resident eating human flesh on Sunday.

This morning, shocked policemen were still trying to piece together details of the gruesome incident, which they believe started early on Sunday when the 35-year-old man allegedly hunted down his victim and shot him with a home-made gun.

He then allegedly dragged the body to his house in the reserve and chopped it up.

Police Inspector Gugu Sabela said that the victim's body was cut into small pieces. Police could not tell whether it was a man or woman.

"The body was cut up and cooked in a three legged pot," said Sabela.

She said that police officers were horrified when they found that some of the human flesh had been eaten.

A man was arrested and taken to police cells in Durban. The remains of the victim's body were put into a bag and taken to a mortuary in Scottburgh.

One police office said that police stationed at Folweni received a telephone call from a member of the public who reported that a man in the Nkonka Reserve was eating human flesh. The police rushed to the man's house where they found cooked human flesh in a pot.

They also found human remains and internal organs in the house.

Other residents in the reserve gathered in groups, concerned that the victim may have been a family member or friend. But police were unable to establish the identity of the victim.

Forensic scientists will examine the remains on Monday.
