Chemists' fake medicine show grinds to halt

Three Potchefstroom pharmacists have been fined for distributing R50-million in stolen and counterfeit medicines.

Derrick Adlam, 40, Deon de Beer, 38, and Johan du Toit, 45, who operated a syndicate which repackaged and distributed counterfeit, stolen and expired medicines, pleaded guilty in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Adlam was fined R300 000 or three years in jail, De Beer was fined R50 000 or three months in jail, and Du Toit was fined R20 000 or two months in jail.

Each received a suspended five-year jail term and a R232 431 loss in terms of the Asset Forfeiture Act.
