Durban - An off-duty police officer was shot dead and his fiancee was critically injured in an attack while fishing at a dam on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, police said on Monday.

Superintendent Jay Naicker confirmed that Captain Kevein Marallich and his fiancee Cathy Potgieter had been fishing on Sunday afternoon at a farm dam near the town of Nyoni, about 30km north of KwaDukuza (Stanger), when they were attacked.

It is believed that the couple were confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a high calibre pistol.

Marallich was shot in the face and Potgieter was severely assaulted and was found by farm workers floating in the dam.

Netcare spokesperson Jeff Wicks said Potgieter was in a critical condition in Umhlanga hospital.

Both were from Eshowe and Marallich worked for the police's crime intelligence unit in Eshowe. - Sapa
