On Sunday, Durban residents marched in protest against a highly toxic chlorine leak from the Sasol polymer chlorine factory at Umbogintwini on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. The leak affected 28 people last week.

The protesters called for the factory to be closed and for stricter environmental pollution regulations.

On Thursday, 28 people were treated for respiratory problems after 50kg of chlorine gas escaped into the atmosphere.

Provincial government officials met on Sunday evening to discuss closing the factory again.

The plant was reopened last month after being closed for some months following another major pollution incident. - Sapa
