Port Elizabeth - Eastern Cape police arrested a 25-year-old gang affiliate at the Gelvandale Magistrate's Court in Port Elizabeth on Monday on a charge of murder.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said it was alleged that Joseph Oosthuizen, 43, was standing at the back of a house in Ibex Street in Helenvale when the suspect entered the yard on Sunday afternoon.

Naidu said that one gunshot was fired which hit Oosthuizen in his groin. Oosthuizen later succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital.

She said the alleged shooter was meant to appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate's Court on Monday for a separate case of malicious damage to property.

It was during this time the suspect, who is affiliated to the 'Upstand Dogs' gang, was arrested for Oosthuizen's murder.

He expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a charge of murder.
