Port Alfred - A fisherman drowned at the Kowie River mouth entrance to the Port Alfred Harbour on Wednesday afternoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

It appeared that a commercial fishing boat was broadsided by a wave, causing the man to fall overboard, NSRI Port Alfred station commander Juan Pretorius said in a statement.

“On arrival on-scene the body of a man was found floating in the water near to the breakwater on the sea side.”

NSRI swimmers retrieved the body and extensive efforts were made to resuscitate him, but he was declared dead on the scene. He was believed to be around 50.

“Police have opened an inquest docket and the body of the man was handed into the care of the police and the forensic pathology services.”
