Port Elizabeth - A preliminary investigation has revealed that Port Elizabeth teacher Jayde Panayiotou was shot, police say.

Police said a post mortem would still be carried out on Wednesday or Thursday.

“The preliminary investigation indicated that the victim was shot and the post mortem will indicate the cause of death and further assist investigators with their investigation,” says police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

Panayiotou, 28, was reportedly abducted from outside her complex in Kabega Park in Port Elizabeth early on Tuesday morning.

Her body was found in an isolated area near KwaNobuhle on Wednesday morning.

Panayiotou taught Grade 4 to Grade 7 at Riebeek College Girls' High School in Uitenhage.

Van Rensburg said that reports alluding to a possible link between one of the suspects wanted in connection with a hijacking that took place last month and Panayiotou's disappearance and murder could not be confirmed at this stage.

Police have announced that a special task team comprising members of the SAPS crime intelligence, detectives and forensic divisions has been established to try to track down Panayiotou's killers.

They are appealing for anyone with information regarding the case to come forward.

Any person who information regarding the matter is requested to please contact their local police station or Kabega Park Police Station on 041 397683/57 or Warrant Officer Anel Van Eyk at 041 3976857.
