A voice text message, as well as a voice note warning about a total blackout across South Africa, is sowing panic as Eskom continues to implement rotational load shedding. Neither message has been communicated through official channels and the origins of the messages could be confirmed by IOL.

Eskom has warned that the messages are fake and says load shedding is implemented in order to prevent a total blackout.

In recent days South Africans have again been subjected to load shedding, which Eskom had previously vowed was a thing of the past. The utility has previously said that the power cuts are as a result of a shortage of generating capacity which the utility on Wednesday night said it had managed to resolve through load shedding.

Currently, most of the country is experiencing Stage 2 rotational power cuts between 9 am in the morning and 10 pm at night. The situation is likely to continue at least until the end of the week.
