Grahamstown - Chaos between police and students at Rhodes University escalated as rubber bullets, pepper spray and tear gas were used against a group of students protesting against the rape culture and the sexual assault policy at the university. Six Rhodes students were arrested during the chaos.

The Rhodes SRC Facebook page stated that a student had to receive medical treatment. There is also a video showing one of the students having a panic attack in the back of a police van.

The Rhodes SRC Facebook page also stated that “protesters are encouraged not to leave campus, they will not have protection outside the bounds of the institution.”

Earlier an email from the university’s management was read out to the gathered crowd informing them that all academic activity had been suspended until further notice due to the ongoing protests.

Protest leaders are demanding immediate action by management against the people they identified as “rapists” on the #RUReferenceList.
