Five rugby players were still missing on Monday after being swept out to sea off the coast of Port Elizabeth, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

“All we can tell you is that the search is continuing,” spokesman Craig Lambinon said.

Earlier, search efforts were bolstered by the arrival of an air force helicopter with two swimmers. A police dive unit, dog unit and Bluewater Bay lifeguards had been searching since first light on Monday.

The Motherwell Rugby Football Club members went missing in the bay on Sunday, after being swept out to sea by rip currents.

Lifeguards rescued 15 people in total. A member of the rugby team was taken back to shore, but died on the scene. The team had apparently taken to the water to cool down after a rugby practice. - Sapa
