Port Elizabeth - South African Police Service (SAPS) officers have arrested two alleged gangsters for attempted murder in Port Elizabeth and seized an illegal firearm, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

Members of the Port Elizabeth tactical response team (TRT) held a special operation in Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp in Port Elizabeth on Friday, focusing on wanted gang members, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

At about 4pm, TRT members "penetrated a house of a well-known gang member in Gelvandale".  Two suspects were arrested for an attempted murder case which took place in September 2017. A 9mm pistol was also recovered. The pistol was found hidden under paving in the yard.

It was alleged that at about 7:30pm on September 17 two teenagers, 17 and 18 years old, were standing at the corner of Deverill and Standford roads when a man alighted from a car and started shooting at them. Both teenagers were wounded. The arrested suspects would appear in court on Monday, Naidu said.
