Two dead as taxi carrying school pupils crashes in Eastern Cape

King William's Town - Two people died and 12 were injured when a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi carrying school pupils from Ngcobo to Willowvale crashed near Mbewuleni village, Dutywa on the R408 on Friday night, Eastern Cape police said.

A 17-year-old schoolgirl and the 27-year-old minibus taxi driver died in the accident at about 9pm. Twelve other school pupils were injured and were rushed to Butterworth Hospital, Captain Jackson Manatha said on Saturday.

The cause of the accident was not known. Dutywa police had opened a case of culpable homicide and were investigating the cause of the accident. The identities of both deceased would be withheld until all their relatives were officially informed of their death, Manatha said.
