Qunu -

The Abathembu kingdom on Sunday expressed satisfaction and gratitude for the support shown since the death of former president Nelson Mandela.

“Up to this point we are satisfied that at least our statesman and senior member of our family is quite respected in this country, Africa and all over the world,” spokesman Chief Daludumo Mtirara.

Mtirara addressed reporters outside the Thusong Community Centre in Qunu after a meeting.

He said Sunday went as planned as the entire country held prayer meetings in remembrance of the iconic anti-apartheid leader.

“Everything today went as planned. Everyone, wherever they are, is comfortable to share this day to also celebrate the life of our grandfather.”

Mtirara said the royal house was happy with the progress being made leading to December 15, the day on which Mandela would be laid to rest in Qunu.

He said Mandela deserved the support he was getting from all over the world. It was quiet outside the house on Sunday afternoon as a drizzle fell from time to time.

Meanwhile, at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Qunu, people continued to write messages of support on a white banner hung on a wall outside and left flowers against the wall.

A flame of hope was lit at the museum on Saturday. It was described as resembling the shining light that Madiba represented to the world.

The five flags outside the museum continued to fly at half-mast. - Sapa
