Port Alfred - The body of an unidentified woman has been recovered from a river in Kenton-on-Sea near Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Saturday.
NSRI Port Alfred duty crew were activated at about 7.40am on Saturday following reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS) of a suspected drowning in progress at the Kariga River, Kenton-on-Sea, NSRI Port Alfred station commander Juan Pretorius said.
The sea rescue craft Rescue 11 Alpha was towed to the scene by the NSRI sea rescue vehicle, and a SAPS K9 search and rescue squad and Holistic ambulance services also responded.
"On arrival on the scene it was confirmed by police that a body was reported floating on the Kariga River. We launched our sea rescue craft and we recovered the body of a female from the river. The body of the female was brought to shore aboard our sea rescue craft.
"The body of the unidentified adult female has been taken into the care of police and the forensic pathology services, and police have opened an inquest docket and are investigating," Pretorius said.
