What is believed to be the first lesbian divorce in South Africa since gay marriages were legalised in 2006, was finalised in the Cape High Court on Friday.
Elaine Burnett from Gordon's Bay and Esther Groenewald from Strand were divorced before Acting Judge Sven Olivier.
It was the first lesbian divorce filed in the Cape High Court. Burnett and Groenewald were married in 2007. Burnett, who filed for divorce, said that the marriage had broken down.
A couple from Midrand were the first gay men in the country to file for divorce in July 2007 since the Civil Union Act was passed into law in 2006.
