Alleged ATM robber shot dead in Bloemfontein

Johannesburg - A man was killed, one injured and two others arrested after a shoot-out while they were attempting to rob security officers who were loading an ATM at the Central Park shopping complex in Bloemfontein, police said in a statement on Monday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said in incident occurred on Monday morning. " As they [two security officers] were nearing the ATM, they decided to survey the area for possible threats, and as they were nearing toilets they were accosted by armed men."

Mbambo said that was when a shoot-out ensued between the securities and the suspects which ended in two suspects being shot and two arrested. 

"One suspect, 43, from Lesotho, died on the scene, the other a 33-year-old from Witbank was referred to hospital for treatment where he is under police guard, and the other two, 27 and 28, were arrested after they were found hiding in the toilets."

She said three firearms, a Parabellum with serial number filed off, and Star and Lorcin pistols were recovered on the scene and would be taken for ballistic tests to determine the ownership and whether they were used in the commission of other crimes. 

Cases of attempted armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms have been registered for further investigation.
