Manhunt launched after Free State man gunned down in parking lot

Welkom - Free State police have launched a manhunt after a man was gunned down in a parking lot at a shopping centre in Welkom. 

The incident happened on Sunday at around 5.30pm at the Commando shopping centre parking lot. 

In video footage obtained, two men are seen casually approaching a parked blue VW Polo before one of them pulls out a gun and shoots at the motorist multiple times. 

The suspects then open the open the door and drag the man's lifeless body out of the car before speeding off in his vehicle. 

Free State police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng confirmed the shooting and theft of the 54-year-old man's vehicle.

"Two unknown African men shot him three times in his chest and two times on his left arm. He was pulled out of his vehicle and suspects drove off with his vehicle. 

"He was certified dead at the scene." 

A manhunt was launched and police later recovered the man's vehicle next to Digger's Inn in Steyn 2. 

Thakeng confirmed that a case of murder and hijacking was registered for further investigation. 

He also urged anyone with have information that could lead to the arrests suspects to contact Captain Pieter from the Welkom Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit on 0798842179.
