Johannesburg - Six people were killed and eight injured when a bakkie and two cars collided between Trompsburg and Edenburg, Free State, paramedics said on Sunday.

They were killed on the N1 on Saturday evening, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

“Paramedics found a bakkie with a trailer lying several meters into an open veld next to the N1. Two people were trapped inside. They were declared dead.”

Four other people were found dead several metres from the bakkie.

“Four more people were found on the scene from other vehicles with various serious injuries.”

The driver of one of the cars was among this group.

He was in a critical condition.

Four other people suffered minor injuries.

The bakkie apparently collided with a car, and a second car then ploughed into the two vehicles.

Local authorities were investigating the cause of the accident. - Sapa
