Lucky for us, there are so many things to do in South Africa that are budget-friendly and most of all fun!

Here are 10 fun things to do in the Free State for under R100.

 

Star gazing

Bloemfontein, the City of Roses, is jam-packed with activities to keep you occupied for the whole day.

Authentic Boere kos

The Farmer’s Market in Langhovenpark, Bloemfontein is open every Saturday from 7am to 1pm. Entry is free.

 

Catch of the day

The banks of the Modder River is perfect for spending the day fishing. Day visitors pay from R40 per person in summer (R60 on public holidays). No entrance after 3pm.

Picnic in the shade

The Freestate National Botanical Gardens is the perfect place for nature lovers. The gardens are home to 54 reptile species and 140 bird species. Open seven days a week, entrance for adults and students is R20, for senior citizens and scholars tickets cost R14 and for children at pre-school entrance is R10. Call 051 436 3530.

Zombies vs aliens

If you’re into adventure activities like paint balling, Ruins Paintball and Airsoft Field in Bloemfontein is a must. They do themed nights like Zombies vs Aliens. It’s R100 for paintball gear and R100 for paint balls. Call 079 504 9100

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a jewel in the Free State crown, and it costs next to nothing to explore this untamed wilderness. Entry fee is R40 per adult, kids R20.

A dam fine time

The Free State’s largest nature reserve is home to the Gariep Dam. There’s also accommodation options from chalets to campsites. If you’re keen to rough it for a few days, campsites are on offer from R100.

Culture vulture

The Basotho Cultural Village, in Golden Gate Highlands National Park, is a chance to experience a unique way of life. The village is a rest camp that resembles an 18th century Basotho Village combined with replica homesteads. A guided tour of the cultural village costs R70 per adult and R40 per child between six and 16 years.
