Johannesburg - Fifteen people were treated for mild smoke inhalation on Friday night when a fire broke out in a block of flats in Duncanville, south of Johannesburg, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics and the fire services arrived and found the top floor of the flats well alight.

"Residents had already evacuated from the building and were now lining the sidewalk. Fire services began to battle the blaze while paramedics assessed the residents. Upon assessment, paramedics discovered that 15 patients had suffered from mild smoke inhalation," Meiring said.

"Paramedics treated the patients on scene, providing the with medical oxygen. Once treated, the patients declined transportation to a hospital. Fire services were able to extinguish the blaze after a short time."

The cause of the fire was not known and would be investigated, he said.
