Johannesburg – A bakkie overturned near the Grasmere turnoff on the R82 in the Vaal area, east of Johannesburg, on Friday morning leaving 25 people injured, three of them seriously.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics and other emergency services had arrived on the scene to find a one-ton bakkie lying on the side of the road with its canopy completely ripped off.

“Numerous patients were found scattered around the scene,” he added.

A total of 25 people were found to have been injured, three of them seriously. The remaining 22 had sustained “minor to moderate injuries”.

Meiring said the injured were treated on the scene.

The seriously injured were provided with "advanced life support interventions" before being taken to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.

“It is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll and eject the occupants off the back of the vehicle,” Meiring said.

Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
