Johannesburg - A memorandum demanding better service delivery was handed over to Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Johannesburg Mayor Amos Masondo on Wednesday, the Azanian People's Organisation (Azapo) said.

A group of Azapo supporters marched to the mayor's office and the premier's office to hand over the memorandum.

“The march was a success and the memorandum was given to both the premier and the mayor's office,” Azapo Gauteng chairperson Samore Herbstein said.

He said the premier and the mayor were not present but representatives received the document on their behalf.

“We are giving them 14 days to respond to our demands before we take further action,” he said.

Azapo said it was demanding an end to corruption on the housing list.

“We have records of several cases where an applicant is told that he has been given RDP houses, only to find that the RDP house is occupied by someone else,” Herbstein said.

“RDP” houses are named after the Reconstruction and Development Programme.

“We demand that all private land where there are informal settlements, be expropriated by the government and developed for the benefit of the residents. We demand that all residential evictions be halted.”

The march started at Beyers Naude Square in the city centre just after 12pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Herbstein said about 1 500 people attended the march. - Sapa
