Johannesburg - Metro police on Friday arrested 36 hawkers and window washers on the streets of Johannesburg.

The group was arrested on the M2 Eloff and on the M1 Smith road, said Inspector Edna Mamonyane.

They were kept at the Johannesburg Central police station and were expected to appear in local courts soon for loitering.

On Thursday, police arrested 53 others.

That group consisted of street traders, beggars and window-washers.

A blind man and a man in a wheelchair were also rounded up, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

The department of social services would be brought in to assist by taking the beggars to a shelter.

The operation was aimed at making the city safer, Minnaar said.
