Johannesburg - The body of an unknown man was found next to the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House, in the Joburg CBD on Friday morning.

The man was seen “sleeping on the ground” by residents of a nearby flat around 7pm on Thursday night.

On Friday morning, security officers at Luthuli House arrived before 6am and they also said they thought the man, estimated to be between 35 and 45 years old, was just a homeless person sleeping.

A reporter from The Star arrived at the scene at 6.45am and contacted police and emergency services as passersby walked past the dead man’s body.

The unknown man lay facing the wall. A 25kg mealie meal bag was among his belongings.

Upon arriving 10 minutes later, Netcare 911 paramedic Mojalefa Mashapa said the man’s nose was very dry, which showed he had been dead for some time and his body showed signs of rigor mortis, which begins within two to six hours of death.

“During winter we find many homeless people like this,” he said.

The man was declared dead at the scene at 7am and 30 minutes later police arrived and took a statement.
