Body of newborn baby found in river in Marlboro

Johannesburg - The body of a newborn baby boy was discovered in a river in a north Johannesburg suburb, paramedics said on Monday.

The shocking discovery was made on Monday afternoon in the suburb of Malboro. 

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics, along with the Provincial Services, arrived on the scene after they were contacted by members of the community.

"Upon arrival, paramedics found the body lying in the middle of the river among some refuse.

"The South African Police Services's (SAPS) Search and Rescue were called to the scene to recover the body."

Once the newborn was recovered, paramedics found that the boy showed no signs of life. 

Meiring said nothing further could be done for the infant and he was declared dead on the scene. 

"The details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations," Meiring said.
