Roodepoort - A nine-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was dragged behind a pickup truck for about 2.5 kilometres in Roodepoort, in Gauteng, the ER24 paramedic service said.

The incident happened on Thursday night.

"ER24 paramedics were called to a nearby filling station at the Main Reef and Roode Road Intersection where the bakkie had come to a stop," Russel Meiring, a spokesman for the private paramedic service, said.

"Upon assessment, paramedics found that the boy had sustained serious injuries to his back and buttock, leaving him seriously injured."

Police were probing the incident.

"It is believed that the patient and his friends had jumped onto the back of the bakkie at an intersection," Meiring said.

"After driving some distance, unaware of the children, the boy attempted to jump off the vehicle when his foot got caught in cargo netting. The driver was allegedly alerted to the boy being dragged behind his vehicle by another motorist."
