Johannesburg - People can now vote on the fate of Nelson Mandela, thanks to a tip poll at Cramer’s Coffee.

A tip poll has been in operation at the Joburg coffee shop since 2009. Customers can express their opinions on topics of the day by tipping a particular side.

A recent poll sampled customer sentiment on Mandela’s health status. Through the poll they could tip either for: “Although death is inevitable, it’s hard to imagine a world without Mandela. May his values live on (forever)”, or “However, I still believe he will live on to see the age of 100 (mark my words)”.

The majority of customers tipped for the former. The author of the poll, Mpho Mogoshane, 21, said he and his colleague, Sakhile Xaba, 25, had thought of the question.

“This is controversial because everyone is talking about it,” Xaba said.

“Strangers have one thing in common, and that is Mandela,” he added.

A previous owner of the coffee shop, Graeme Pyle, is the brains behind the tip polls, which began in 2009.

The polls aim to promote interest and discussion of current issues.

The question on the poll is decided each morning by a staff member.

The assistant manager at Cramer’s Coffee, Lekunutu Thobatsi, said the polls cover contentious issues ranging from e-tolling to the Guptas
