Johannesburg City Power Managing Director Silas Zimu has resigned, the electricity distributor said on Saturday.

“Zimu intends to focus his attention on private business opportunities outside of the municipal environment after almost a decade in the service of City Power,” Johannesburg City Manager Mavela Dlamini said in a statement.

His resignation would come into effect from October 31.

Dlamini said the city accepted Zimu's decision with “deep regret” and wished him well in his future ventures.

“While we accept his resignation with deep regret and sadness, we are very grateful and proud of our association with him.

“We thank him for his many valuable contributions especially his innovative approach in many projects over the years and for his extraordinary dedication and service.”

Zimu's projects would remain a legacy for the city to take forward in its future operations.

Zimu joined City Power in 2001 as general manager for planning and technology services and was subsequently appointed as vice president of customer services in July 2002. He was then promoted to managing director on May 1 2007. - Sapa
