Johannesburg - Residents in the north of Joburg were left terrified after an unexplained explosion in Fourways early on Thursday morning.

Panic set in as people tried to find out what could have caused the blast or if it posed a threat.

But their fears were allayed when it was later discovered that the explosion had been a controlled detonation at the Fourways mall, where construction work is currently under way.

A security guard at the shopping complex, who did not want to be named, told The Star that he had been standing in the parking lot near the construction site when the explosion went off.

“I heard this loud noise and ran for cover, I didn’t know what was going on,” he said.

Twitter revealed that this wasn’t the first early-morning blast that baffled residents.

“It was massive, it woke the kids up,” tweeted @CarolynPenny on Tuesday.

@rogerasturgess tweeted: “There was an almighty explosion at about 6am. Any idea what it was?”

A construction manager said the explosions were part of work being done at the mall.
