Johannesburg - Twenty-seven people were arrested for public violence in Bekkersdal, near Westonaria, on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

They were among people protesting against poor service delivery in the area, said Constable Thembi Masango.

Protesters threw stones at the Bekkersdal police station, damaging three police vehicles and a disaster management vehicle.

Police also found that a petrol bomb had been thrown at the station, said Masango.

Rubber bullets were fired to disperse the protesters.

They were still protesting just before 2.30pm, and police were monitoring the situation, she said.
