Johannesburg - A power outage caused by vandalism of an Eskom tower has affected the water supply in some parts of Springs, east of Johannesburg, the Ekurhuleni municipality said on Saturday.

“The water supply process requires electricity to pump water from the reservoir,” said spokesman Themba Gadebe.

The areas affected by the water shortage were Selection Park, Geduld, Dal Fouche, Pollack Park and Wright Park.

The municipality had dispatched roving water tankers in the affected areas, said Gadebe.

“Meanwhile efforts are being intensified to restore the power supply in the area.”

The 132kv Eskom tower was vandalised on Friday.

“Several areas were left without the power supply after a theft of the tower steel elements resulting in the collapse of the Eskom tower,” Gadebe said.

He said engineers worked until late on Friday to restore power but had to stop for safety reasons.

Engineers begun repairing a vandalied Eskom tower on Saturday morning.

Power was estimated to be restored in the areas by midnight.
