Johannesburg - Four people were killed on Monday when a bus veered off the road, in Fontainebleau, Randburg, and hit nine people, Johannesburg emergency services said.

Around 4.30pm, the driver apparently lost control of the bus at the intersection of Republic Road and Maria Street, spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.

The bus left the road and struck people who were waiting at a bus stop.

Four people were declared dead on the scene and five were critically injured.

The injured were treated on the scene before being taken to hospital.
