Johannesburg - The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) on Friday confirmed it was investigating serious allegations of sexual assault, against a teacher who about fondled learners at Kodumela Primary School in Pretoria.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said: “It is disappointing to learn about these disturbing allegations as educators have a responsibility to be role models, and our children cannot be afraid to go school in fear of sexual assault/s by an educator. Such incidents are regrettable and must not be allowed to prevail in our schools”.

The teacher allegedly fondled the children last week at the school.

"The officials from the department visited the school already, and continue with an investigation which will be finalised in due course accordingly," the GDE said.

"We can also confirm that, the educator has been served with a notice of intention to suspend him today, 08 September 2017, and as such he will not report at the school on Monday. The mooted suspension will necessitate that, learners go back to school, without any fear."
