Cape Town - A Grade 12 pupil at Diversity High School in Johannesburg died after being knocked down by a car.
The young man, who has not been named, had reportedly stepped off a school bus and was attempting to cross the road when he was hit by an oncoming motor vehicle. Emergency services were called to transport the pupil to a nearby hospital.
The boy's parents were also contacted and arrived on the scene of the accident before he was taken to the hospital. The pupil died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
“We take this time to send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the school community of the said learner, during this time of grief,” said Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
Learners and educators will receive counselling to help them deal with the trauma. The Gauteng Department of Education has also undertaken to provide support to the family of the pupil.
