Johannesburg - "Hands off Herman Mashaba, hands off." These were the words of hundreds of Democratic Alliance (DA) supporters ahead of the motion of no confidence in Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba.

Mashaba and Speaker Vasco da Gama face a motion of no confidence brought by the African National Congress Joburg.

ANC forges ahead with motion to remove mayor Mashaba

In September the ANC bid to hold a secret ballot against the pair failed.

Marchers made their way to the City of Johannesburg council chambers from Paul Roos Park, led by DA leader Mmusi Maimane.

Upon arrival at the city chambers, supporters were addressed by provincial DA leaders including Gauteng Provincial chair Mike Moriarty, who made it clear that they stood behind Mashaba.

"We call upon Joburg citizens to tell the ANC that they are opportunists.

"The mayor has launched over 2 000 investigations into cases of corruption... only a corrupt person would want to remove him."

Mashaba, a Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, became Mayor of Johannesburg in August last year following a coalition agreement between smaller parties to oust the ANC from power after the Local Government Elections.
